Who Was Daedalus? One question we are frequently asked is: "Who was Daedalus?" The following is his story, and the reason that he was chosen to represent our company. According to Greek legend, Daedalus was the man who designed the Cretan labyrinth for King Minos; the lair of the Minotaur. King Minos sought to imprison the hero Theseus into the labyrinth, but Theseus was told the mazes solution by Daedalus. Theseus slew the Minotaur and escaped from the island. In his rage, Minos then imprisoned Daedalus and his son Icarus in the labyrinth. However, Daedalus was a skilful craftsman and fashioned wings for himself and Icarus from feathers and wax which they found in the maze. Daedalus and Icarus flew from the maze and sought their freedom. Icarus failed to heed his fathers advice and was killed when he flew too close to the sun, melting the wax in his wings. He fell to his death into the Aegean sea, an area today called the Icarian Sea after him. Daedalus however escaped and landed in Sicily where he lived the remainder of his days. As Daedalus Computing, we help our clients to find solutions to the often labyrinthine problems of their IT requirements. We see the allegory of Daedalus escaping the Cretan labyrinth as our help to allow our clients to seek a similar escape from their problems. This is represented in our company logo and in the solutions which we provide ...Oh! and it's pronounced: Dee-Da-Lus |
